South Western Railway has officially announced a major railway expansion project to reduce congestion on the busy Bengaluru-Bangarpet route. This long-awaited project will upgrade the existing 42-km rail stretch by adding two more tracks to the current double line, effectively turning it into a four-line corridor, which will be a

huge benefit to the passengers.
Project Cost
The project is estimated to cost around ₹1,481 crore and aims to improve the movement of both passenger and freight trains. As the route is heavily crowded, trains often get delayed since they have to wait for clearance on the same tracks. With the addition of new lines, the route capacity will increase significantly, allowing more trains to run smoothly and on time.
Survey Conduction
The plan has been under discussion for several years. Initial surveys for the project started in 2022, but the detailed project report was submitted only in November 2025, missing earlier deadlines. To speed things up and avoid further delays, the Ministry of Railways has now declared it a special railway project to help in faster land acquisition and quicker approvals.
How will the Project Benefit Passengers?
The project is expected to benefit daily commuters travelling from nearby towns such as Devangonthi, Malur, and Tekal, where passengers currently face frequent delays due to congestion. Once completed, the upgraded line will reduce waiting times and improve travel comfort. Moreover, it will also improve long-distance train services between Bengaluru and Chennai. Popular trains like Vande Bharat Express, Shatabdi Express, and Kaveri Express are likely to run more punctually with fewer delays caused by crossing and track congestion.
This quadrupling project is expected to ease railway traffic, improve connectivity, and make train travel faster and more reliable for passengers.
