Bengaluru Metro to Receive 21 New Six-Coach Distance-To-Go Trains by Second Quarter of 2027

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is expected to receive 21 new six-coach Distance-To-Go (DTG) trains by the second quarter of 2027. The prototype train, built at CRRC's factory in China, arrived in Bengaluru in January 2025 but has not yet entered service. It must complete 37 safety approvals and

The remaining trains are being made at Titagarh Rail Systems' factory in West Bengal. So far, three trainsets have reached the Peenya depot for the Green Line. Currently, Bengaluru Metro operates 57 trains across the Purple Line (43 km) and Green Line (33 km). Usually, around 76 trains are needed to maintain a smooth frequency of one train every three to four minutes.

Bengaluru Metro's New Coaches to Start Operations

The new trains are likely to start entering service by July 2026, which should help reduce overcrowding. Testing between trains and signalling systems is expected to finish by mid-May 2026, followed by software updates and safety approvals. The first train from the Titagarh-CRRC partnership may begin operations by the end of July 2026. BMRCL may also upgrade its signalling system and onboard software to improve efficiency. All 21 trains are expected to be delivered by May 2027, though faster production could complete delivery by March 2027, and it is likely to increase to two trains per month from July 2026.

To improve operations, all new CRRC trains may run on the Green Line, while 17 older trains could be shifted to the Purple Line to increase train numbers on both lines.

Meanwhile, the Yellow Line is gradually improving, with more trains being added. The Pink Line project is also progressing, but some approvals are still pending before it becomes operational.
