The proposed annual fare hike for Bengaluru's Namma Metro has come under fresh scrutiny after the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 3A suggested a different method of increasing fares in the coming years.
Bengaluru Metro's Annual Fare Hike Plan
Metro fares were last revised in February 2025, when ticket prices increased by an average of 51.55%. At that time, based on the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), fares were expected to increase by up to 5% every year through an automatic revision system.
Bengaluru Metro Fare to Rise by 12% Every Three Years
However, the revised DPR for Phase 3A presents a different plan. Instead of annual increases, it assumes that metro fares will rise by 12% every three years. If this proposal is followed, the minimum fare is expected to increase from Rs 10 to Rs 14, while the maximum fare could go up from Rs 90 to Rs 126 by 2033, when Phase 3A is expected to be completed.
The fare revision mentioned in the DPR is different from the system currently in place. The existing fare structure is based on the recommendations of the first Fare Fixation Committee, whose decisions are legally binding under the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002. According to this mechanism, fares can be revised annually rather than once every three years.
The difference between the two fare revision models has raised questions about how future metro fares will actually be decided. It is not yet clear whether Bengaluru Metro will continue with the current annual revision system or adopt the method mentioned in the revised project report.
As Bengaluru continues to expand its metro network, fare affordability remains an important issue for daily commuters. Any future increase in ticket prices is likely to have a direct impact on thousands of passengers who depend on Namma Metro for their daily travel.
Officials are expected to clarify the fare revision plan as the Phase 3A project moves forward. Until then, no changes have been officially announced beyond the existing fare mechanism.
