Bengaluru's much-awaited Blue Line Metro corridor connecting the city with Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is likely to be delayed further. The 58.19-km Blue Line was earlier expected to be fully operational by December 2027. However, the latest target has now been shifted to March 2028.
Bengaluru Metro's Blue Line to be Operational by March 2028
The Blue Line will connect Silk Board Junction with Kempegowda International Airport through important areas such as KR Puram and Hebbal. While some parts of the corridor are expected to become operational earlier, passengers will have to wait until 2028 for the complete airport connection.
According to the revised schedule, trial runs on the 19.75-km section between Silk Board and KR Puram could begin in October 2026. Trials on the Iblur-Silk Board section may start by December 2026 or January 2027.
The KR Puram-Nagawara section is expected to open by mid-2027. Meanwhile, the Nagawara-Hebbal-airport section, which was earlier targeted for June 2027, is now expected to open around September or October 2027.
Challenges Faced by Bengaluru Metro
Construction delays at several locations have affected the overall timeline. Work at Marathahalli and Silk Board is still pending. At Silk Board, the metro viaduct needs to be extended by around 413.8 metres over the existing flyover to allow trains to reverse.
Hebbal is another major challenge for the project. The station is planned as an interchange between the Blue Line and the proposed Orange Line. Construction in the Nagawara-Hebbal area also requires additional clearances, affecting work between Kempapura and Hebbal.
The section between Yelahanka, theIndian Air Force area and the airport terminal has also faced delays. The contractor has sought time until March 2027 to complete the work.
