Bengaluru Pink Line Prototype Shifts to Kothanur Depot Overnight Ahead of Driverless Metro Trials

The prototype train for Bengaluru Metro's long-awaited Pink Line will be shifted to the Kothanur depot in the next few days. Officials from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said preparations are in progress to move the six-coach train by road.

Trainset to Reach Kothanur Depot

According to BMRCL sources, the trainset, recently produced by BEML Ltd., will be taken apart and transported on heavy trailers from the BEML Rail Complex at New Thippasandra to the Kothanur depot. The distance between the two locations is around 20 kilometres. Officials explained that the entire shifting process may take one day, but the movement will happen only at night. This is because heavy vehicles are allowed to move within city limits only during night hours.

New Driverless Metro Train

On December 11, 2025, BEML unveiled the prototype of a new driverless metro train developed for Namma Metro's Phase-2 projects, including Phase 2A and Phase 2B. The Pink Line is one of the most important upcoming metro corridors in Bengaluru. It will connect Kalena Agrahara in south Bengaluru with Nagawara in the north. The corridor is planned to be opened in two stages by the end of 2026.

Process of Getting Approvals

Once the train reaches the depot, BMRCL will start the process of getting necessary approvals from the Ministry of Railways, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), and the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). Before carrying passengers, the train will go through several standard safety and performance tests.

Progress of Pink Line Construction

Meanwhile, BMRCL Managing Director J. Ravishankar recently inspected the Kothanur depot to review the readiness for receiving the train. He also checked the progress of Pink Line construction, including both elevated and underground sections, to ensure work is moving as planned.

Under the contract, BEML will supply 318 metro coaches for the Pink Line and the Blue Line to the airport, along with maintenance support for 15 years.
