Bengaluru Metro to Introduce Three New Six-Coach Trains on the Green Line by August 2026

Bengaluru Metro is expected to introduce three new six-coach trains on the Green Line by August 2026, giving much-needed relief to commuters who have been facing overcrowded trains during peak hours. The trains are being supplied by CRRC-Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL). Although the prototype train arrived in January 2025, it was delayed by more than a year before entering passenger service.

Bengaluru Metro's Green Line Trials Delayed

According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), three Distance-To-Go (DTG) trainsets, including the prototype built by CRRC, have already been delivered. The prototype was damaged during transportation through Chennai port, and repairs took several months. Testing was also delayed because trials could only be conducted on the operational Green Line during non-commercial hours, usually for only four hours on a few days each week.

BMRCL has now completed oscillation and signalling tests. Some issues were found while operating the trains in Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode, and these are being fixed by Alstom. After the trains receive final approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), all three are expected to begin service by August.

Operation of Titagarh Trainsets on the Green Line

BMRCL plans to operate all 21 CRRC-Titagarh trainsets only on the 33-km Green Line, while the remaining 20 trains are being built at the company's Uttarpara factory in West Bengal. As the new trains enter service, 17 existing BEML trainsets will be shifted to the Purple Line, improving train availability on both corridors.
Currently, the Purple and Green lines together have only 57 trainsets for their 77-km network, leading to heavy crowding. Ideally, one train is needed for every kilometre to maintain a frequency of three to four minutes.

Bengaluru Metro to Receive Trainsets by December 2026

BMRCL expects to receive another eight to ten trainsets by December 2026 and hopes to complete delivery of all trains by March 2027, ahead of the official deadline of June 2027. These additions are expected to significantly improve Bengaluru Metro services and reduce congestion for daily commuters.
