Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat Trials Begin: Can This New Train Conquer the Western Ghats?

The South Western Railway (SWR) begins testing the Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat train today. This crucial trial run runs from August 11 to August 20. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation will oversee the critical tests. It marks a historic step for coastal Karnataka rail connectivity. Passengers will soon experience faster, cleaner travel through the scenic region.

The trial targets the challenging 55-kilometre Sakleshpur to Subrahmanya Road section. This Western Ghats stretch is famous for its steep one-in-fifty gradient. It features 57 tunnels, 226 bridges, and 108 sharp curves. These demanding elements require extreme caution. Therefore, safety teams will monitor every transition closely during this phase.

Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat Trial Run 2026: Route, Safety Features, and Expected Launch Date

Technical Readiness of Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat

The Integral Coach Factory built a special 20-coach rake for this route. It is equipped with a crucial Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system. This technology automatically applies brakes if speeds exceed 30 kilometres per hour. Thus, the train can descend safely without using extra banker locomotives. This system is a first for Karnataka rail operations.

Western Ghats routes often face severe weather, landslides, and heavy mudslides. Railway safety teams remain on high alert throughout the monsoon trials. Landslides in late July disrupted earlier schedules along this mountain pass. Therefore, engineers must test track stability under heavy rain conditions today.

Expected Route and Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat Timings

The regular service will likely connect Yesvantpur to Mangaluru. Proposed halts include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Subrahmanya Road, and Puttur. Passengers can check live trial status via the National Train Enquiry System. This handy tool provides real-time updates on scheduled train movements.

Feature Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat Details
Ghat Speed 30 kmph max limit
Rake Size 20-coach air-conditioned set
Safety System Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)

The entire route was fully electrified in late December 2025. SWR expects the new service to cut travel times significantly. Commuters can look forward to a fast seven-hour journey soon. The successful completion of this test phase will finalize launch timelines this month.
