Bengaluru Braces for Heavy Showers This Week; Karnataka on High Monsoon Alert

Karnataka is getting ready for a rainy week as the southwest monsoon becomes stronger. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts across the state, including a red alert for parts of the coastal areas and orange and yellow alerts for several inland districts, including Bengaluru Urban. People are being asked to prepare for wet roads, strong winds, and steady rainfall.

Bengaluru Braces for Heavy Showers

Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Forecast

The IMD has predicted continuous rainfall and gusty winds in many parts of Karnataka over the next four days. Coastal and interior districts under red and orange alerts are expected to receive the heaviest showers, and residents in these areas should stay alert. In some places, wind speeds could go up to 50 kmph, which may cause trees to fall or damage lightweight structures.

Districts under the red alert include Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga. These places could receive extremely heavy rainfall in a short time.

Alerts for Other Districts

An orange alert has been issued for Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Chamarajanagar, Davanagere, Hassan, and Mysuru. These areas could experience very heavy rainfall and should take precautions. A yellow alert, which signals heavy rain, has been issued for Mandya, Koppal, Kalaburagi, and Bidar. People in these areas are also advised to stay cautious, especially near water bodies or low-lying zones.

Why Is It Raining So Much?

A senior IMD scientist from Bengaluru explained that the heavy rainfall is because of two main weather systems. One is an upper air cyclonic circulation over Marathwada, and the other is a trough line that stretches from this system all the way to coastal Andhra Pradesh, passing over Telangana. These conditions are causing widespread rain across the state.

Also, a former cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has now joined with another system near south Bangladesh. This has made the rains even stronger and more widespread.

What to Expect in Bengaluru

For Bengaluru, light rain and cloudy skies are expected from June 16 to June 19. No special warnings have been issued for the city during this time. But from June 20 to June 22, the rainfall is expected to increase, so people should carry umbrellas and drive carefully on slippery roads. Daytime temperatures will stay around 29-30 degrees Celsius, and nighttime temperatures will be close to 20 degrees Celsius. Humidity will remain high.

As Karnataka welcomes the monsoon, it brings both cool relief and some challenges. People are advised to stay safe, follow local updates, and enjoy the refreshing change in weather.
