Bengaluru: You Can Ride Through Lalbagh on E-Cycles to Explore Rare Trees This Monsoon

Lalbagh Botanical Garden in Bengaluru is getting greener and more visitor-friendly this World Environment Day. The Department of Horticulture has launched a new eco-transport initiative and plans to plant hundreds of rare native trees. These efforts aim to promote sustainability, protect biodiversity, and offer a better experience for visitors.

Explore Lalbagh in a Greener Way

Electric Cycles for Public Use

To support eco-friendly transportation, Lalbagh has introduced thirteen electric bicycles and tricycles on a one-month trial basis. These battery-powered cycles can run up to 50 kilometres on a single charge, making them a clean and quiet way to explore the garden.

Officials say this is just the beginning. Depending on how the public responds, they will decide the final pricing and officially launch the service. There are also plans to set up specific take-and-drop locations for the cycles, making it easy for people to access and return them.

Tree Planting to Boost Biodiversity

Along with electric cycles, the garden is also focusing on planting rare and native trees. A total of 341 trees from 110 different genera will be planted along Lalbagh's 5-kilometre-long compound wall. This move is expected to protect and increase the region's natural biodiversity while adding to the scenic beauty of the garden.

These rare trees will not only improve the environment but also provide shade and attract birds and insects, helping the garden become a more vibrant ecosystem.

QR Codes for Plant Information

To help visitors learn more about the trees and plants around them, Lalbagh will soon introduce QR codes on selected trees. At first, 50 species will have QR codes, but the number will increase over time.

Visitors can scan these QR codes with their phones to get detailed information such as the plant's origin, flowering and fruiting seasons, uses, and where else it is found. This mix of nature and technology will make visits to Lalbagh both enjoyable and educational.

The introduction of electric bikes and rare tree plantations at Lalbagh shows a clear move toward greener, cleaner cities. By encouraging sustainable transport and educating people about nature, Lalbagh is leading by example.

With the trial phase already started, visitors can now enjoy a peaceful ride through the garden while learning more about its rich plant life. These green steps are not just good for the environment-they also make visiting Lalbagh more fun and meaningful.
