across Thiruvananthapuram turn into one vast sacred space filled with faith and prayer.

Attukal Pongala 2026

In 2026, Attukal Pongala will be observed on Thursday, 5 March 2026. The festival is celebrated on the Makayiram Nakshatra day in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. Unlike many Hindu festivals, its date is not decided by a fixed lunar tithi. Instead, it follows the Malayalam calendar, where the combination of the Kumbham month and Makayiram Nakshatra determines the observance. The main Pongala ritual is always completed during auspicious daytime hours, as per temple tradition.

Traditions of Attukal Pongala

Attukal Pongala is dedicated to Attukal Amma, the Divine Mother worshipped at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple. The festival is unique because it is celebrated mostly by women. They sit in long rows across the city, using earthen pots and stoves to prepare Pongala. When thousands of stoves are lit together from the sacred temple fire, it creates a powerful and emotional sight.

Significance of Attukal Pongala

Attukal Pongala represents humility, surrender, and collective feminine energy. It is believed to bring peace, protection, and fulfillment of sincere prayers. Associated with the legend of Kannaki, the festival inspires women to awaken inner strength, patience, and justice. Even those who cannot attend are encouraged to honour the day through prayer, kindness, and respect for women, keeping the true spirit of Pongala alive in their hearts.

Pongala Dish

Pongala is a simple sweet dish made with rice, jaggery, coconut, and ghee. It is considered auspicious when the dish boils over slightly, as this is seen as a sign of abundance and the Goddess's acceptance. After cooking, priests bless the Pongala by sprinkling holy water.
