Assam, a beautiful state in India, is famous for its lush tea gardens. These tea gardens are not only vital to Assam's economy but also a major attraction for tourists from all over the world. People come from far and wide to see the scenic beauty of these sprawling green estates. As per the latest data, Assam's tea exports reached an impressive US$ 415.62 million in the fiscal year 2021. Tea alone accounted for US$ 281.42 million, making up 68% of the total exports. This highlights the significant role that tea plays in the state's economy.

Major Development Plans for Tea Gardens
In a recent announcement, Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, revealed a significant step the state is taking regarding its tea gardens. The Assam government has decided to spend Rs 800 crore to build all-weather roads in 800 tea gardens across the state. This plan aims to improve connectivity and ensure smooth transportation in and out of these tea gardens throughout the year.
Construction of All-Weather Roads
During a press conference, Chief Minister Sarma shared that the state cabinet had approved the proposal to improve the infrastructure in the tea gardens. "To ensure all-weather connectivity in tea gardens, the cabinet has accorded approval to construct line roads in 800 gardens," he said. Each road will be built at a cost of Rs 1 crore, totaling Rs 800 crore for the entire project. This initiative is expected to greatly benefit the tea industry by making transportation easier and more reliable.
Additional Infrastructure Developments
The cabinet also approved a proposal to allocate Rs 8 crore to each school to upgrade the infrastructure of 126 state-run educational institutes, with a total expenditure of over Rs 1,000 crore. The Chief Minister stated, "We have set a target to upgrade the building infrastructure of 500 government high schools during my tenure. Already, work for 126 schools was going on and with today's decision, infrastructure in 252 schools is being upgraded." The government also plans to upgrade the infrastructure of an additional 1,000 Assamese medium high schools during its next tenure after the 2026 assembly polls.

Real-Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS)
The cabinet has also approved guidelines for the installation and maintenance of the Real-Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS), 2024. This system will facilitate the collection of hydrological data for effective water resource planning and flood forecasting in critical river basins of the state. Chief Minister Sarma mentioned, "A 10-year tentative roadmap for installation of nearly 800 RTDAS units for data collection across the state of Assam has been approved."
State-Run Coaching Institutes
In another initiative, the government is opening state-run coaching institutes for poor and middle-class students preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). "Currently, two centers are operating in Dibrugarh and Tezpur. This year, three more will be opened in Nalbari, Silchar, and Jorhat, followed by Pathsala and Bongaigaon. We plan to open one such center in every district," the Chief Minister added.
Assam's tea gardens are a blend of natural beauty and economic importance. The state's new initiatives, including the construction of roads in tea gardens and upgrading school infrastructure, are steps towards improving the overall development of the region. These efforts will not only boost the tea industry but also enhance the quality of education and infrastructure in Assam, making it a better place for its residents and a more attractive destination for tourists.
