Assam to Get New Expressway, Railways and Waterways; Check Details

Guwahati recently hosted the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, an important event focused on Assam's growth. The summit brought major investments and new transport projects that will improve connectivity across the state.

Assam to Get Expressway

On the first day of the summit, Assam secured 164 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), with investments worth INR 1.89 lakh crore. These investments will help in the development of various sectors and boost economic growth in the region.

Improving Road Connectivity

One of the main topics discussed at the summit was better transportation. On February 26, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke about Assam's plans to improve road and water transport. He highlighted a major infrastructure project worth INR 55,179 crore announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

A key project in this plan is the construction of a four-lane road between Guwahati and Barapani (Umiam, Meghalaya). This road will cost around INR 25,000 crore and will include several tunnels. Once completed, it will reduce travel time and make transportation faster and smoother. The project will also improve access to Panchgram, an important industrial area in Assam.

New Railway Projects

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced new railway projects at the summit. Two new intercity trains will start running between Guwahati and Silchar, and Guwahati and Agartala. These trains will make travel easier for passengers.

Since 2014, the government has built 1,824 km of new railway tracks in Assam and the Northeast. The introduction of Gati Shakti cargo terminals will also help in transporting goods, boosting trade in the region.

Waterways to Boost Connectivity

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal discussed the importance of using Assam's rivers for transportation. The Brahmaputra and Barak rivers can be used for both passenger and cargo transport. This will improve trade and create new business opportunities.

The Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit has set the stage for Assam's future growth. With large investments, better roads, new railway projects, and improved waterways, Assam is moving towards becoming a strong economic hub. These developments will benefit the people of Assam, making travel and business easier in the coming years.
