The Andhra Pradesh government is making major strides to improve public transportation by introducing metro rail systems in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu recently held a high-level meeting with ministers and officials to discuss the project. The meeting highlighted the state's commitment to creating modern, efficient transportation for its citizens, ensuring easier travel in these rapidly growing cities.

Innovative Double-Decker Design
A key feature of the proposed metro rail system is its double-decker structure in areas where metro routes intersect state and national highways. This design will save space and integrate well with existing infrastructure. The plan includes a 66 km metro network in Vijayawada and a 76.9 km network in Visakhapatnam. Chief Minister Naidu has approved this design, showing his dedication to urban development.
Ramakrishna Reddy, the managing director of AP Metro Rail Corporation Limited, presented details about the project. He emphasized how the metro system would use advanced technology to benefit the public.
Project Phases and Routes
The metro project will be developed in phases, starting with key routes in both cities:
- Visakhapatnam: A 15 km double-decker metro stretch will connect Madhurawada to Thatichetlapalem, with an additional 4 km route from Gajuwaka to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
- Vijayawada: A 4.7 km double-decker metro line will link Raamavarappadu Ring Road to Nidamanuru.
These routes aim to reduce travel time and make commuting more comfortable for residents.
Seeking Central Government Support
To ensure the project moves forward smoothly, Chief Minister Naidu has instructed officials to work with the central government for financial and logistical support. Since the metro rail project was proposed under the State Reorganisation Act, the central government is expected to play a key role in funding it. The Chief Minister hopes to see the metro rail system operational in the next four years, supported by a policy framework introduced in 2017 to streamline metro funding.
The metro rail project is a significant step toward improving urban mobility in Andhra Pradesh. By providing a reliable and efficient mode of transport, the state government aims to meet the needs of its growing population. The metro system is expected to reduce congestion, save travel time, and boost the overall quality of life for residents.
