The Andhra Pradesh government is taking significant steps to boost its economy and technological infrastructure by launching the Data City near Visakhapatnam. This initiative, designed to replicate the success of Hyderabad's Hitec City, aims to transform Visakhapatnam into a major hub for information technology, focusing on data centres, artificial intelligence, and other tech solutions. Spread across 500 acres in Madhurawada, the Data City is part of the Telugu Desam Party's commitment to generating 20 lakh job opportunities within five years.
The state's push towards technological innovation is spearheaded by Nara Lokesh, the IT minister and a key figure behind the Data City concept. Lokesh, who has discussed this ambitious project with global tech leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, sees the initiative as a cornerstone for attracting top-tier IT and tech firms. By fostering collaborations with companies like Temasek Holdings and Cognizant, the government aims to establish Visakhapatnam as a prime destination for technology firms, further enriching India's tech landscape.
To kickstart the project, the Andhra Pradesh government has begun acquiring the necessary land. Notably, Google is set to establish a data centre on an 80-acre parcel of land, a move that follows a Memorandum of Understanding with the state. This development, alongside Tata Consultancy Services' expansion onto 30 acres, is expected to catalyze further investment from IT corporations, echoing the strategy that made Hyderabad's Hitec City a magnet for tech companies.
Creating a New Economic and Tourist Attraction
To complement the Data City and enhance its appeal, the government is contemplating the introduction of new tourist attractions in the vicinity. This strategy aims to leverage the anticipated influx of investments to rejuvenate Andhra Pradesh's economic landscape, especially following the state's division and the resultant loss of Hyderabad to Telangana. The bifurcation significantly impacted Andhra Pradesh's economic standing, prompting the current administration under Naidu to focus on decentralizing development efforts and revitalizing the state's economy.
In line with this vision, attracting a major player such as Google is seen as pivotal for drawing additional IT and tech companies to the area. This approach mirrors the successful model employed in the development of Hyderabad's Hitec City, where the presence of leading firms acted as a beacon for other businesses. The establishment of Data City in Visakhapatnam is poised to not only fulfill the job creation pledge but also position the city at the forefront of India's tech industry advancement.
