Amid War Tensions- Trains Cancelled, Passengers in Jammu Turn to Taxis Charging ₹30,000

For anyone planning to travel by train in North India, especially near border areas, it's important to stay informed about the current disruptions. Following the rising tension between India and Pakistan after the recent terror attack and India's military response, train services in parts of Rajasthan-particularly close to the border-have been seriously affected. Some trains are cancelled, others are rescheduled, and special trains are being run to help stranded passengers. Here's a simple and clear guide to help you plan better.

Passengers Stuck in Jammu: A Real Struggle

Many travellers are stuck in Jammu after tensions rose in the region. We spoke to a few devotees who had just completed their visit to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. Their return tickets were reserved for May 10, but fearing the situation could get worse, they decided to leave early. They tried hiring a taxi to Delhi, and the driver asked for ₹30,000-much higher than normal. They agreed, desperate to reach home. But soon after, the driver called to cancel, saying conditions had worsened in his area. With few options, they somehow managed to board a sleeper class train to Delhi. This is just one of many such stories of people struggling to find safe and affordable ways to return from Jammu and surrounding regions.

Special Trains Announced to Help Travellers

To help those stranded due to flight cancellations and high taxi fares, Indian Railways has started special trains:

Train No. 04612: Leaves Jammu at 10:45 AM with both reserved and unreserved coaches

Special Vande Bharat Express: Departs from Udhampur at 12:45 PM via Jammu and Pathankot (heading to Delhi)

A fully reserved special train is also scheduled to leave Jammu at 7:00 PM

Advice for Train Travellers Right Now

If you're travelling by train soon, especially from Rajasthan or northern regions like Jammu and Punjab, here's what you should do:

- Check your train status on the Indian Railways website, helpline, or app

- Arrive early at the station due to tighter security

- Expect delays or sudden changes to your route

- Stay informed by watching the news and following official railway updates

Looking Back: Trains During Past Conflicts

During previous wars with Pakistan, train travel was also affected-especially in border areas. Services were suspended or rerouted to keep passengers safe and give priority to military transport. While today's situation hasn't reached that level, it's important to be cautious and flexible.

If your journey takes you through areas like Barmer, Jaisalmer, Jammu, or the border districts of Punjab and Rajasthan, stay alert and informed. The Indian Railways is trying to manage things, but the situation can change fast. For now, non-essential travel should be postponed if possible. If you must travel, keep checking updates and have backup plans ready.
