Air Kerala is gearing up to make its debut in India's competitive aviation market by June next year, with its first flight scheduled to depart from Kannur International Airport. This marks a significant milestone for the newly established airline, which aims to carve a niche in regional aviation. Although the first destination after takeoff is yet to be revealed, the airline has already made crucial hires, including a CEO and CFO, and secured a crucial agreement with Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL) to kickstart its operations.

In line with its strategy to enhance regional connectivity, Air Kerala has entered into an agreement with KIAL. The airline plans to start by offering a considerable number of flights from Kannur, targeting domestic locations within a 90-minute flight radius. This initiative is set to strengthen regional air travel and lays the groundwork for the airline's future growth. Air Kerala Chairman Afi Ahmed has acknowledged KIAL's significant contribution, stating, "Infrastructure at Kannur Airport is ready, and the management has extended full support to establish our base. Kannur International Airport will play a major role in our operational strategy."
Fleet Expansion and Vision for the Future
Starting with regional twin-engine turboprop ATR aircraft, Air Kerala aims to transition to narrow-body jets as part of its growth strategy. Looking ahead, the airline plans to extend its services globally, connecting Kannur with international destinations. The focus is on building a network that offers smooth connectivity for regional passengers to international flights, potentially turning Kannur Airport into a crucial hub for worldwide travel.
To set its ambitious plans into motion, Air Kerala has received a no-objection certificate from the Civil Aviation Ministry as of July and is currently in the process of obtaining a flying permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This step is critical for the airline to start its commercial operations as scheduled.
A New Era in Indian Aviation
Air Kerala aims to offer an affordable, reliable, and efficient mode of travel, redefining both regional and international air travel experiences from Kerala and beyond. With its strategic partnership with Kannur Airport, the airline is poised to introduce a new chapter in the Indian aviation sector. As June 2025 approaches, Air Kerala's entry into the market is keenly anticipated, signaling a promising development for travelers and the aviation industry alike.
Air Kerala's journey from planning to near-launch showcases a focused strategy on regional and future international connectivity. With key partnerships and regulatory approvals in place, the airline is on the brink of becoming a significant player in enhancing air travel within India and eventually on a global scale.
