Air India has issued an important advisory for passengers traveling to and from Delhi between January 19 and 26, 2025. With Republic Day celebrations approaching, the airline has urged travelers to allow extra time for their journey and check their flight status in advance. This advisory comes as the capital gears up for the festivities, which will include heightened security measures and potential traffic delays.
"Passengers traveling to and from Delhi between 19 & 26 Jan 2025, are requested to allow themselves more time and check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, due to Republic Day restrictions," Air India shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. Travelers are also encouraged to contact the airline's support center for assistance.
Challenges for Air Travel
The advisory is not only due to security restrictions but also seasonal challenges. Dense fog has been affecting Delhi's visibility, causing delays and disruptions at the airport. This fog, combined with the ongoing cold wave, has made travel more difficult. Air India acknowledged these conditions, stating, "Poor visibility due to dense fog and airport congestion may affect flight operations in Delhi and some other cities today."
The winter season in Delhi often brings heavy fog, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of flight delays. In addition, the cold wave has contributed to worsening air pollution levels, making the situation more challenging for travelers and residents.
Deteriorating Air Quality
Delhi's air quality has significantly worsened, slipping into the 'very poor' category. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 344 at 7 am, up from 252 the previous day. Some areas, such as Vivek Vihar, recorded AQI levels as high as 414, indicating 'severe' air quality. Other parts of the city, including Mandir Marg, Rohini, and the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, also experienced poor air quality.
The AQI scale ranges from 0 to 500, with levels above 300 considered hazardous. The current conditions pose health risks, and the public is advised to take precautions, especially when spending time outdoors.
