Ahmedabad's 2 Historic Bridges Closed for Expansion and Repairs as City Revamps Infrastructure

Ahmedabad is taking big steps to improve its city infrastructure with a major renovation of two historic bridges: the 108-year-old Kalupur Bridge and the 83-year-old Sarangpur Bridge. These bridges, vital for city connectivity, have been temporarily closed to the public for a large-scale renovation. This ₹439 crore project is a joint effort by the Railways and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), responding to damage caused by rat infestations, which corroded the bridges' iron grilles over time. According to AMC Councillor Iqbal Sheikh, the renovation will not only repair this damage but also expand both bridges to four lanes. The project is expected to take around 18 months to complete.

Ahmedabad s 2 Bridges Closed

The bridge closures are part of a broader plan to modernize Kalupur Railway Station, Ahmedabad's main railway junction. Due to these closures, there has been a rerouting of traffic to ensure people can still access the station. Passengers can now reach Kalupur Railway Station through the old entry gate, exiting via the west side footbridge. Additionally, a new 30-foot road has been built to connect the station directly to the main road, making it easier for travelers.

Managing Traffic During Renovations

To keep the city's traffic moving smoothly, specific detours are now in place for drivers. Those heading from Sarangpur Circle to Kalupur Railway Station should go through Sindhi Market, then to Panchkuva. For travelers coming from Sarangpur, Raipur, Kankaria, or Geeta Mandir, a one-way road from Kalupur Railway Station has been opened for use. These temporary routes are helping to keep traffic under control and reduce disruptions caused by the bridge closures.

Additional Infrastructure Updates

Ahmedabad's development projects extend beyond the bridges. Starting November 9, the approach road to the Gandhi Ashram will also be closed for the Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment project. To make sure people can still visit the Ashram, alternative routes have been created, and two new parking lots have been added. This project, which will continue until 2026, is part of an effort to modernize the area while preserving its historical importance. In early November, a high-level meeting will be held with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Ashram authorities to discuss the progress.

The renovation of Kalupur Railway Station itself is also a key project, with a targeted completion date of June 2027. This station revamp is part of the city's larger goal to improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors. To manage crowds during this time, the sale of platform tickets has been paused at three Ahmedabad stations until November 6.

Ahmedabad is undergoing significant transformation, with its historic bridges and main railway station receiving major upgrades. These efforts aim to honor the city's heritage while preparing it for the future. Though there may be temporary inconveniences, these improvements promise to enhance connectivity and infrastructure, making life better for everyone in Ahmedabad.
