The long-awaited Metro service between Shivajinagar and Hinjewadi in Pune should be opened for passengers without any further delay, opposition leaders and representatives of the city's IT sector have said. The demand comes as commuters and employees continue to face serious traffic problems while waiting for the Metro line to become operational.

Pune Metro's Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Line
The Pune Metro Line 3 is an important project connecting Shivajinagar with Hinjewadi, one of Pune's biggest IT and employment hubs. The elevated corridor is around 23.2 km long with 23 stations, developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to provide a faster and more reliable public transport option between the city centre and Hinjewadi.
How will Pune Metro's Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Line Benefit Passengers?
The route is expected to benefit thousands of IT professionals who travel every day between Pune and Hinjewadi. At present, heavy traffic on the roads leading to the IT hub often results in long travel times, particularly during office hours. The Metro is therefore expected to reduce pressure on roads, shorten commuting time and make travel more convenient.
Why is it being delayed?
However, the opening of the corridor has been repeatedly delayed despite the completion of major construction work. Earlier reports stated that the route was ready for operations but was waiting for the mandatory safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). Without this approval, passenger services cannot begin.
Raising Demands from Communities
Opposition parties and IT industry groups are now asking the authorities to complete the remaining formalities quickly and start services. They argue that commuters have already waited long enough and that another postponement would cause further inconvenience. Moreover, the demand for an early opening is also linked to Pune's growing traffic and expanding technology sector. With thousands of employees travelling towards Hinjewadi every day, the Metro could provide a major alternative to private vehicles and buses.
Stakeholders have therefore urged the government and concerned agencies to take immediate action so that the Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro corridor can begin passenger operations as soon as possible, without any further unnecessary delay.
