Ahmedabad is gearing up for rapid development as it eyes hosting the 2036 Olympics. This ambition has prompted the state government to reconsider its infrastructure plans, particularly the long-stalled third ring road project. To facilitate swift land acquisition, over 100 town planning (TP) schemes are being proposed. Officials believe this corridor is crucial to alleviating traffic on existing roads, with a plan expected by next year.

The third ring road was initially part of a draft development plan 19 years ago but saw no progress in terms of land acquisition or groundwork until now. "Given the rising pressure on the existing 132-ft Ring Road and Sardar Patel Ring Road, as well as a growing need for enhanced connectivity, the state govt has decided to accelerate the third ring road project. The potential for hosting the Olympics has prompted us to reprioritize this long-delayed plan," said a senior official.
Focus on Efficient Land Acquisition
The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda), Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and the urban development department (UDD) are collaborating to expedite this initiative. Sources involved in planning indicate that the new development plan will incorporate the third ring road, possibly with route adjustments. "Keeping the Olympics and long-term growth in mind, the govt has decided to give the third ring road top priority in the new development plan. Experts have broadly agreed to proceed with the previously proposed alignment, with small modifications if necessary," a source said.
Officials noted that traditional road development methods through revenue rules often lead to legal issues and delays. Instead, TP schemes offer a more structured approach, ensuring faster land acquisition and planned growth along the corridor. "This method ensures both quicker land acquisition and planned growth along the corridor," a source added.
Ambitious Town Planning Undertaking
The proposed third ring road is set to be one of Gujarat's largest town-planning projects. By 2025's end, a new draft development plan and an action plan for acquiring land through over 100 TPs are expected to be ready. This comprehensive approach aims to streamline processes and meet future demands efficiently.
With these initiatives, Ahmedabad aims not only to improve its infrastructure but also position itself as a strong contender for hosting international events like the Olympics. The focus remains on creating sustainable growth while addressing current urban challenges.
