Ahmedabad’s 80-Year-Old Kharicut Canal to turn into 6-Lane Corridor; Check Details

Ahmedabad's Kharicut Canal, which once played a key role in irrigation during the British period, is now set for a major change. Once filled with waste and pollution, this historic canal will soon become a modern six-lane mobility corridor by 2027. The project will not only improve traffic movement across the city but also solve long-standing issues related to flooding and pollution.

Ahmedabad s Kharicut Canal s Makeover

A new chapter for Kharicut Canal

On 11 March, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced a budget of Rs 1,003 crore for the second phase of the Kharicut Canal Redevelopment Project. This part of the plan will cover 28 kilometers of the canal's 80-kilometer stretch within Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's area. The canal starts at Raipur village and ends in Chandola Lake near the Ahmedabad-Vadodara expressway.

In recent years, the canal has faced many problems, including waterlogging, waste disposal, and industrial pollution. Unplanned and unauthorized construction along the canal has made these issues worse. During heavy rains, the city suffers from floods, especially in the north, east, and south zones.

Tackling floods with smart planning

To stop this, a new stormwater drainage system will be built along the mobility corridor. This system will help manage heavy rain and prevent the canal from overflowing. The first phase of this project, started in 2022, covered a 12.75 km stretch. Now, the second phase aims to continue the progress and solve the flooding problems across more areas.

In total, the complete redevelopment project will cost Rs 1,338 crore. Out of this, Rs 1,192 crore will go towards civil construction work, while the remaining funds will be used for beautification and related works. Over Rs 700 crore has already been used so far in building this new corridor.

Better traffic and public health

This new six-lane road will connect the north and south ends of the city. It will make travel faster and easier while also reducing waste and stopping mosquito breeding. Cleaner surroundings and better drainage will improve public health for nearby residents. The canal's water-handling capacity will also increase by 42%, which means faster and better drainage during rains.

The transformation of the Kharicut Canal is a big step forward for Ahmedabad. With improved traffic flow, flood control, and public health, this project shows the city's strong efforts toward smart and sustainable urban development.
