After the Mumbra accident, Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro will be extended to Ambernath; check routes

After the tragic train accident in Mumbra that claimed four lives and injured many others, concerns about overcrowded local trains in Mumbai have grown louder. In response, Kalyan MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde met with senior officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to discuss ways to improve public transport and reduce the load on local trains. A major decision from this meeting was the extension of Metro Line 5 from Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan to Ambernath via Ulhasnagar.

Metro Line 5 will now extend to Ambernat

Metro Extension Plans

The meeting, led by MMRDA Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, concluded with the decision to extend the metro line from Durgadi Naka to Chikhloli Railway Station in Ambernath. This new route will run along the Kalyan-Badlapur Road. Dr. Shinde shared the update on social media platform X, saying the new metro stretch will bring great relief to commuters from Ambernath, Badlapur, and Ulhasnagar who currently depend heavily on overcrowded suburban trains.

To make commuting even easier, an integrated transport hub is being planned at Chikhloli station. This hub will allow passengers to move easily between metro services and local trains, saving time and making the journey smoother. The extended metro line is expected to provide an eco-friendly travel option, reduce fuel usage, and ease traffic congestion on the roads.

Shiv Sena MLAs Balaji Kinikar and Rajesh More also attended the meeting and supported the move. The MMRDA has now been asked to quickly complete the detailed project report (DPR) for the metro extension.

Other Infrastructure Projects

Apart from the metro extension, several infrastructure projects in the region are also being pushed forward. The Kalyan Ring Road project will now move faster, especially at the Nevali junction, where a two-level structure is planned with a flyover and a metro track above it. The tendering process for this segment will begin soon.

Other projects include a U-shaped road in East Kalyan and an elevated flyover from Palm Resort to Vithalwadi over the Waldhuni River. Dr. Shinde also reviewed progress on the Navi Mumbai-Badlapur access-controlled corridor and stressed the need for faster construction.

Together, these steps aim to improve travel and reduce the everyday struggle faced by thousands of commuters. With better roads and more metro options, the government hopes to create a safer, faster, and more comfortable public transport system for people in the Kalyan-Ambernath area.
