Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. has signed a new agreement with ABB India Ltd. to work together on driverless metro technology for India's rail network. This partnership focuses on creating propulsion systems, the key equipment that powers metro trains, especially for 25 kV AC driverless metro projects across the country.

ABB India's Work on Driverless Metro Technology
Under this deal, ABB India will help design, make, test, supply, and install these propulsion systems. It will also transfer technology for the Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS), which is important for controlling and operating driverless metro trains. Over time, Titagarh will start co-producing crucial components like converters and traction motors alongside ABB.
Advanced & Self-Reliant Metro
This agreement supports India's efforts to build more advanced and self-reliant metro train technology, in line with government initiatives, including Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). It allows Titagarh to gradually build local manufacturing skills for high-tech metro equipment rather than relying entirely on imports.
Mumbai Metro Coaches
The collaboration also ties in with Titagarh's existing contract to supply 240 metro coaches for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), 132 cars for Line 5, and 108 cars for Line 6. These are two major metro lines under development in Mumbai that will benefit from better propulsion and control technology as part of this partnership.
How will ABB's Expertise Boost Metro Service?
By bringing in ABB's expertise and transferring technology to Indian manufacturing, this deal aims to boost local capability to build and service modern metro systems. This is expected to strengthen the overall rail manufacturing sector in India and help the country meet future metro technology needs with more home-grown solutions rather than relying on foreign suppliers.
