On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, marking a major milestone in the region's development. This state-of-the-art infrastructure project is expected to boost tourism and improve connectivity to Ladakh, providing a reliable route to Sonamarg throughout the year. The 6.5 km tunnel, part of a larger 12-km project set to complete by 2028, showcases the government's commitment to enhancing transportation and regional growth.

A Landmark Infrastructure Achievement
The Z-Morh Tunnel, named after its Z-shaped structure, derives "Morh" from the Hindi word for "turn." Situated over 8,650 feet above sea level, the tunnel links Gagangir to Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of central Kashmir. It features a two-lane bi-directional road and a 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage.
This engineering marvel ensures all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, making travel to Leh, the Amarnath Caves in Baltal, and other parts of Ladakh possible throughout the year. Previously, avalanches and heavy snow often caused road closures during winter, disrupting access to these key destinations.
PM Modi's Visit and Significance
During the inauguration, PM Modi inspected the tunnel and interacted with project officials and construction workers, acknowledging their efforts in challenging conditions. The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
PM Modi arrived in Srinagar at 10:45 am and then traveled to Sonamarg for the ceremony. This marked his first visit to the Union Territory since last year's assembly elections. His presence underscored the tunnel's importance in improving connectivity and fostering regional development.
Boosting Tourism and Economy
Built with an investment of approximately ₹2,700 crore, the Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to transform travel and tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. It offers a safer, more reliable route for tourists heading to Ladakh and other scenic spots in the region. The tunnel is also poised to enhance access to pilgrimage sites like the Amarnath Caves, drawing visitors year-round.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the project's significance on social media, calling it a symbol of progress and a step forward for the nation's infrastructure.

A Catalyst for Development
The Z-Morh Tunnel is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a symbol of resilience and progress for Jammu and Kashmir. By ensuring seamless connectivity, it will play a vital role in boosting tourism, improving livelihoods, and fostering economic growth in the region. As part of a larger plan to enhance connectivity in the Union Territory, this project promises a brighter future for residents and visitors alike.
