The Maharashtra government has approved the ₹22,862-crore Mumbai Metro Line 8 project. This new metro line will connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) with Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), improving travel between the two airports.

Building of a Metro Car Depot
The state has agreed to provide 40% viability gap funding for the project. It has also allowed the transfer of 27.2 hectares of reserved forest land at Mandale for building a metro car depot.
Funding Plan
Under the funding plan, the Central and state governments will each contribute 20% of the total cost, amounting to ₹3,446 crore each. A private company will invest the remaining amount under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The project will follow the design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) method. City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) will implement the project. The total cost also includes price escalation and interest during construction.
Metro Corridor in Mumbai
The metro corridor will be 34.9 km long. Out of this, 9.8 km will run underground, and 25.09 km will be elevated. There will be 20 stations in total, 14 elevated and six underground. Construction is expected to begin in June 2026 and finish by May 2031. Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd will contribute ₹564 crore, while the private concessionaire will invest ₹9,773 crore. Cidco will spend around ₹2,393 crore on land acquisition and rehabilitation.
Metro Line to Carry Passengers
By 2031, the metro line is expected to carry about 9.82 lakh passengers daily. This number may increase to 17.7 lakh by 2061. The proposed fare in 2031 is likely to range from ₹15 to ₹125, subject to review before operations begin.
The project has been declared a major urban transport initiative to improve airport connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
