A new passenger ferry service between India and Sri Lanka is set to start in July, providing a faster and more convenient travel option. This ferry will operate between Rameswaram in India and Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, completing the journey in just one hour. The ferry will carry up to 250 passengers at a time, offering a new way for travelers to cross the sea between the two countries.
Preparations for the New Ferry Service
The Tamil Nadu Maritime Board has taken steps to set up this new ferry route after receiving interest from an operator. A temporary jetty is currently being built at Rameswaram, and arrangements are being made for customs and immigration facilities. The board is working closely with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure that all necessary clearances and infrastructure are in place before the service begins.
M Vallalar, the vice-chairman and CEO of the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, highlighted the importance of this new service. He mentioned that it would not only revive historical trade relations between India and Sri Lanka but also provide a great opportunity for tourism. Vallalar also stated that more ferry services could be added in the future if there is enough demand from passengers.
Plans for a Permanent Passenger Terminal
In addition to the temporary setup, the maritime board has submitted a proposal to the Union Shipping Ministry for a permanent passenger terminal in Rameswaram. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has helped in designing this project, which is expected to cost ₹150 crore under the Sagarmala programme. This terminal will make ferry operations smoother and help expand the service in the coming years.
Restoring Old Travel Routes
The upcoming ferry service between Rameswaram and Talaimannar marks an important milestone in restoring travel links between India and Sri Lanka. Earlier in 2023, another ferry service was restarted between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai after being suspended for four decades. These efforts aim to make cross-border travel easier, just like it was before the service was stopped due to civil unrest in Sri Lanka.
Boost for Pilgrimage and Tourism
Tourism and cultural exchanges are expected to get a major boost with this ferry service. P Asoka, president of the Approved Tour Guides Association, pointed out that the service would be especially beneficial for pilgrims. Many travelers are interested in visiting important places linked to the Ramayana across both India and Sri Lanka, and this ferry will make their journey more convenient.
Additionally, this service will help international tourists explore both South India and Sri Lanka in a single trip. In the past, many travelers followed this route before ferry operations were stopped in the 1980s. With this revival, visitors will once again be able to experience the rich heritage of both countries without difficulties.
The new ferry service between Rameswaram and Talaimannar is expected to strengthen the relationship between India and Sri Lanka. By making travel easier, it will boost tourism, revive historical trade connections, and improve cultural exchanges.
