Digi Yatra, a groundbreaking initiative in Indian aviation, is set to expand its services to 15 new airports. This initiative aims to streamline airport check-ins and enhance the travel experience for passengers across the country. Let's explore what Digi Yatra is and how it works.

What is Digi Yatra?
Digi Yatra is a biometric-based app that uses passengers' facial scans to simplify airport check-ins. With Digi Yatra, passengers do not need to carry physical identity cards or boarding passes. Instead, they can use their face as their boarding pass at various checkpoints, including the entry gate, check-in, security, and boarding gates. The app ensures data privacy by deleting facial scans within 24 hours.
Current Status
Digi Yatra is already operational at 14 airports across India. These airports are in major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata. The app has successfully registered over 4 million users, highlighting its positive impact on air travel.
Upcoming Expansion
Digi Yatra is now set to expand its services to 15 new airports, bringing the total number of airports with Digi Yatra facilities to 29. This expansion will allow even more passengers to experience the convenience and efficiency of biometric check-ins.
How It Works
Passengers can register for Digi Yatra by downloading the Digi Yatra app from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS). After registering with their mobile number and OTP, passengers can link their identity credentials using DigiLocker or Aadhaar. They will also need to take a clear selfie and upload it onto the app. Once registered, passengers can use their face as a boarding pass at various airport checkpoints.
The system significantly reduces the time it takes to enter the airport, from 15-20 minutes to just around 5 minutes. This streamlined process ensures a smoother and faster travel experience.
Data Security
Digi Yatra places a strong emphasis on data security. The facial biometrics collected are deleted within 24 hours to protect passengers' privacy. The app operates on a secure, privacy-preserving ecosystem, using verifiable credentials stored in a secure wallet and decentralized identifiers on a layer of trust of a distributed ledger.
Impact and Benefits
The expansion of Digi Yatra is expected to bring several benefits to air travelers in India. The app's biometric check-in process offers efficiency, convenience, and enhanced security. Passengers can enjoy faster check-ins, a contactless experience, and a seamless travel process without the need to carry physical documents. The app's secure ecosystem ensures that passengers' data is protected.
A Successful Initiative
Digi Yatra was initially launched in three cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi. It later expanded to other major airports, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata. The achievement of 4 million users demonstrates the platform's transformative impact on air travel, leveraging cutting-edge technology to provide a better experience for passengers.
