14 Km Wildlife Underpass On Dehradun-Delhi Expressway Promotes Ecological Balance

The Dehradun-Delhi Expressway, nearing completion, is gaining attention for its innovative design that accommodates both travelers and wildlife. A 14-km underpass allows safe passage for animals through forested areas, minimizing human-animal conflict. This feature is particularly significant as tourist numbers in Uttarakhand continue to rise.

Wildlife-Friendly Infrastructure

Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) highlight two main benefits of the expressway. It will alleviate traffic congestion and provide a secure route for local wildlife. The underpass is exclusively reserved for elephants, tigers, deer, and other native species, ensuring their safety while maintaining ecological balance.

Camera traps installed by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) have captured images of elephants, deer, and other animals using the underpass. These photos have delighted scientists and forest officials alike. "We are thrilled to see the wildlife thriving in the area," expressed a forest official involved in the project.

Positive Impact on Wildlife Movement

The expressway's design exemplifies how development can coexist with nature conservation. Rajaji Tiger Reserve Director Coco Rose stated, "This is a great example of how development can be done without affecting wildlife." The underpass will be primarily used by wildlife, especially at night when animal activity peaks.

Dr. Bilal Habib from WII noted that camera trap footage confirms diverse animal use of the corridor. "The photographs clearly show movement of elephants and other wildlife," he said. Many images were taken during evening and night hours, indicating successful adaptation by animals to this new infrastructure.

The project serves as a model for future infrastructure developments, aiming to protect natural habitats while accommodating human needs. By integrating such designs, it demonstrates that progress does not have to come at the expense of environmental preservation.
