Kundapur, Maravanthe

Kundapur, the capital of Kundapura Taluk, is one of the 'must visit' attractions of Maravanthe. Also called the Town of the Sun, it derives its name from Kundeshvara Temple. It is believed that during the 16th century, the Portuguese and the German Missionaries lived here and established the town, though it was managed by the British after the reign of Tipu Sultan.

It is also said that this town was the major port of the Rajas of Baindoor. The town is covered by water on three sides – Panchagangavali river to the north, Kalaghar river to the east and Kodi back waters and Arabian Sea to the west; however, no water transportation is available in the town except a few local boats. Tourists can travel via boats from this town to nearby villages like Kodi and Gangolli.
