Karwar is a coastal city in Uttara Kannada, situated on the banks of river Kali. It is a delightful, shielded neighbour of Goa in terms of beaches, adventure sports, food and nature. Karwar derives its name from 'Karwad'. The British made Karwar their headquarters for sea trade in 1862. Karwar port is ensconced by five islands namely Anjidiv, Kudumgad, Devgad, Mogral, and Shamshigudda. These islands protect the port from being destroyed by monster winds. Ibn Battuta, who passed through Karwar, called it 'Baithkol' in his works. Karwar served as a training site for the Indian Navy during World War II.
Karwar offers a stunning view, replete with beautiful landscapes, clear backwaters, and rocky hills. It feels as though the hills are surging out of Arabian Sea and this makes for an utterly beautiful sight.
The main industry of Karwar is agriculture. This place has many lovely beaches. As it follows, Karwar is known for its seafood cuisine. The fish curry here is simply brilliant, yet different. They use simple ingredients such as coconut, ginger and turmeric.
