Woman Appointed As Priest At Rudranjaneyya  Hanuman Temple In Karnataka, Challenges Traditions

Savitramma Shet's appointment as a priest at the Rudranjaneyya Temple in Sirsi challenges long-held gender norms in religious practices, representing a significant shift towards inclusivity.

At the Rudranjaneyya temple in Kansur, Sirsi, a woman named Savitramma Shet has been appointed as a priest to worship Lord Hanuman. Traditionally, it is believed that women should not touch Lord Hanuman and only male priests can offer seva. This appointment challenges that long-held belief.

Reports indicate that the construction of the Rudranjaneyya temple was inspired by Shri Gangadharendra Saraswati Swamiji and Sadguru Shri Ramananda Swami Avadhuta. These spiritual leaders were responsible for performing pujas, vows, and rituals at the temple, with a belief that their offerings could solve various problems.

Breaking Stereotypes

Savitramma Shet's journey to becoming a priest is remarkable. Originally a coconut trader from Ganagapura in Karnataka, she returned to her hometown due to personal reasons. She then travelled to Sirsi, Siddapura, Mundgod, and Banavasi for her trade. One day, Lord Anjaneya appeared in her dream and inspired her to build a temple.

During the search following her dream, idols of Anjaneya, Shiva, Parvati, and Ganesha from the Kadamba era were discovered along with two inscriptions in Kanasuri. This discovery led to the establishment of the Rudranjaneyya temple.

Historical Context

The story of Savitramma Shet is not an isolated incident. In 2021, Nandini Bhowmik, Ruma Roy, Semanti Banerjee, and Paulomi Chakraborty officiated all rituals for the 66 Pally Durga Puja committee in Kolkata. This group of Hindu priestesses broke centuries-old traditions dominated by male priests in West Bengal and beyond.

Savitramma's philanthropic efforts began in 2003 and came to fruition in 2015 with the establishment of the temple. Even at 65 years old, she continues her dharma work with dedication and serves as an inspiration for future generations.

Inspiration for Future Generations

The appointment of Savitramma Shet as a priest at the Rudranjaneyya temple marks a significant shift in traditional beliefs. Her story highlights how ordinary individuals can bring about extraordinary changes through faith and perseverance.

This move also reflects broader changes within Indian society where women are increasingly taking on roles traditionally reserved for men. The example set by Savitramma Shet and other female priests like those in Kolkata paves the way for more inclusive practices in religious spaces across India.

Savitramma's continued service at the age of 65 underscores her commitment to her faith and community. Her work at the Rudranjaneyya temple stands as a testament to breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes.
