The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has officially approved a new metro project called Metro Line 12A in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This new metro line will be an extension of the existing Metro Line 12 and will help improve public transport in the rapidly growing Kalyan-Dombivli, Thane, and
Navi Mumbai areas, where roads are often congested.
Mumbai Metro Line 12A
Metro Line 12A will run for about 18.4 km alongside the busy Kalyan-Shilphata Road and will include 12 elevated stations. The new route will connect key places, including Kalyan Phata, Dahisar Mori, and Padalegaon, before merging with the current Metro Line 12 near Khutari village and then continuing toward Taloja in Navi Mumbai.
Approval of Funds
The project has received administrative approval for around ₹8,414.53 crore, and the authorities are now focused on speeding up construction so that the benefits reach commuters soon. Officials believe the new line will reduce traffic congestion on Kalyan-Shilphata Road and offer a faster, smoother travel option between the eastern suburbs and Navi Mumbai.
Katai Naka & Kalyan Phata Route
Part of the route, between Katai Naka and Kalyan Phata, is also planned to share tracks and stations with the future Metro Line 14, which will further strengthen connections across the region. The line will link to the Nilje depot and is expected to eventually connect with other major transport systems, including the proposed high-speed rail station at Thane.
Once complete, Metro Line 12A is expected to give a significant boost to daily commuting, offering a reliable and quicker alternative to road travel for thousands of people living and working in the greater Mumbai area.
