Holidays in Educational Institutions

The holiday applies to all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, nurseries, central schools, CBSE and ICSE schools, and madrasas. However, in Palakkad, residential institutions like Navodaya Vidyalayas and hostels will remain open.

Red Alert Areas

Idukki was the first district to announce the holiday following the severe weather warning, followed by similar announcements from Malappuram and Palakkad district administrations. Officials stated the step was taken as a precaution to ensure student safety amid the expected heavy downpour. Apart from the three districts under red alert, the IMD has also issued an orange alert for seven districts, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, warning of rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rain.

Orange & Yellow Alert in a Few Places

The IMD further stated that on October 23, orange alerts will be in place for Kannur and Kasaragod, while yellow alerts will continue in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. The department also warned of potential heavy rainfall in isolated parts of the state on October 25 and 26. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official updates as Kerala braces for another spell of intense monsoon rains.
