The Indian Railways has approved a set of important infrastructure projects across several states, including Jharkhand, Punjab, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. These projects are meant to reduce train delays, increase freight capacity, and improve safety and speed for passengers and goods. The approvals were announced by the Union Ministry of

Railways as part of its ongoing efforts to upgrade the country's core rail network.
Jharkhand Railway Line Expansion
In Jharkhand, the focus is on strengthening the Energy, Mineral, and Cement Corridor. This includes doubling the Barbenda-Damrughutu rail line and adding third and fourth lines between Damrughutu and Bokaro Steel City. These upgrades are designed to ease congestion on routes that are currently operating beyond capacity and will help freight trains carrying coal, steel, cement, and fuel move more smoothly.
Electronic Interlocking Systems in Delhi
In the North, the railways are implementing Electronic Interlocking systems at 34 stations in the Delhi and Ambala divisions. This modern signalling technology will improve reliability and safety, support more trains running per day, and work well with other safety tools like Kavach. Also, a Rajpura Bypass Line in Punjab will help freight trains avoid crowded yards, speeding up goods movement.
Two Projects Approved in Kerala
In Kerala, two major projects have been approved. Doubling the rail line between Alappuzha and Ambalapuzha will allow more passenger trains and increase freight capacity. A new Palakkad Town-Parli bypass will cut travel time and reduce delays, especially for freight trains, by removing the need for engine reversals.
Irugur-Podanur Doubling Project
In Tamil Nadu, the Irugur-Podanur doubling project will allow more train services and boost freight capacity, especially on the busy Chennai-Coimbatore-Podanur corridor. This upgrade will help industries in Coimbatore and support long-distance services.
Moreover, these projects are expected to make train travel faster, safer, and more efficient, and help India's rail network keep up with growing demand from both passengers and industry.
