Fresh Snow Blankets Shimla, Dalhousie, and Narkanda; Cold Wave Intensifies, Road Closed

Himachal Pradesh has turned into a stunning winter wonderland as fresh snowfall blankets popular hill stations like Shimla, Dalhousie, and Narkanda. Starting on the night of January 16, 2025, the snowfall has intensified the ongoing cold wave across the state. While it brings scenic beauty and joy to apple farmers, it has disrupted traffic on key roads, including National Highway 5 near Narkanda, forcing travelers to take alternate routes.

Fresh Snow Blankets Shimla

Snowfall and Scenic Beauty

Shimla received a light snowfall of 1.6 cm, enhancing its charm, while Manali and nearby spots like Solang Nallah and Atal Tunnel were also covered in snow. Bharmaur in Chamba district recorded the highest snowfall at 15.3 cm. Other areas, including Gondla and Koksar, experienced significant snowfall as well. Meanwhile, intermittent rain in some parts, including Tinder, has further lowered temperatures, accompanied by moderate to shallow fog in many areas.

Challenges in Transportation

The snowfall has caused road closures in Lahaul and Spiti, with key routes like Darcha, Sarchu, Keylong, Koksar, and the Manali-Rohtang road temporarily shut. Authorities are working to clear these roads, but travelers have been advised to avoid unnecessary journeys. In the lower hills, residents face challenges like frozen water pipes and dense fog, highlighting the harsh impact of the cold wave.

Blessing for Farmers

Despite the disruptions, the snowfall is a boon for apple farmers. It acts as "white manure," improving the quality of their crops and promising a better harvest. The picturesque snowfall also attracts tourists, boosting the region's winter tourism appeal.

Plunging Temperatures

Temperatures have dropped below zero in many hill stations, including Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie, Kufri, and Narkanda. Tabo in Lahaul and Spiti recorded the state's lowest temperature at -11.6°C, reflecting the severity of the cold wave. Visitors and residents are urged to dress warmly and prepare for the harsh conditions.

Weather Warnings

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for cold waves in lower and plain areas of Himachal Pradesh. More snow and rain are expected in the coming days, adding to the region's chilly conditions. While these forecasts point to challenges ahead, they also highlight the unique beauty and benefits of this wintry weather.

The recent snowfall has brought both challenges and opportunities to Himachal Pradesh. While daily life and travel have been affected, the snow is vital for agriculture and tourism. As road-clearing efforts continue, visitors can enjoy the serene, snow-covered landscapes that make the state a must-visit destination in winter.
