Kisama Heritage Village & Its Significance

The name Kisama comes from two nearby villages, Kigwema ("Ki") and Phesama ("Sa"), plus "Ma," meaning village. The Naga Heritage Village, created by the Government of Nagaland, is built on land belonging to these two villages.
Located about 10 kilometers from Kohima, the Naga Heritage Village is a venue to enjoy natural beauty, warm hospitality, and a peaceful environment. Its main purpose is to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of all Naga tribes, including languages, customs, and traditions. The village is a common center for managing, recording, and maintaining traditional practices so they can be promoted through tourism.

During the famous Hornbill Festival, the Heritage Village becomes a symbol of unity, which brings together all the tribes of Nagaland on one platform, allowing them to showcase their rich culture and traditions. You can see, experience, and learn about the Naga's lifestyle and history. The site is also used for various programs, gatherings, and celebrations organized by different groups and organizations throughout the year.

The Heritage Complex includes 16 traditional houses, each representing one of the officially recognized Naga tribes. These houses are built in authentic tribal architectural styles and are known as "morungs" or youth dormitories. Each tribe has its own unique customs and traditions, which are expressed through festivals. Their festivals are filled with songs, dances, and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. The natural beauty of Nagaland adds to the charm, making the place a popular destination for tourists.

The complex also features a World War II Museum, a Bamboo Heritage Hall, a Bamboo Pavilion, a Kids' Carnival, Horti-Scape areas, food courts, and a stadium for live concerts, making it a lively and educational place to visit.

Thus, you can visit every part of the Kisama Village and learn about their culture during this festive season.
