Bellary Fort is one of the major attractions of Ballary (Bellary). The Upper Fort and the Lower Fort together are known as Bellary Fort. The Upper Fort was built by a Hanumappa Nayaka of Vijayanagara Empire. After many years, the Lower Fort was constructed by Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore. The Upper Fort is a hill fort and played a significant role in the defence. Whereas the Lower Fort didn't provide the necessary strategic point and Hyder Ali didn't use it for a long time. Later, Bellary Fort became prominent only during the British rule. The ramparts of this fort hill provide a splendid view of the city. Today, Bellary Fort is one of the best tourist places in Bellary.
