With its enormous population and varied environment, India has traditionally had difficulty closing the digital divide between urban & rural areas. However, the government hopes to improve rural areas through the Digital Village initiative by giving them access to digital services, healthcare, education, & financial inclusion.

The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology started this extensive project, a pilot program that spans 700 villages across the nation, each of which serves as a district or a Gram Panchayat.
The main goal of the Digital Village initiative is to use technology to enhance rural residents' quality of life. The effort attempts to expedite bureaucratic procedures and make them more accessible to rural areas by offering government-to-citizen services like issuing certifications, land records, and social welfare programs. The project also aims to improve services in these sectors for healthcare, skill development, & financial inclusion.
Suitable infrastructure is essential to the project's success in the Digital Village. To implement the plan throughout the 700 villages, the government has set aside a budget of INR 69.96 crore. This comes to roughly INR 9,99,500 for each village. The money is used to build digital infrastructure, such as internet access, computer labs, virtual classrooms, and healthcare centers.
