Wayanad for the Adventurous

Wayanad in northeast Kerala is a haven for tourists wanting to experience forests, waterfalls, mountains, rich tribal heritage and world-class hospitality while staying at the best homestays and eco-resorts. Situated among the lush green mountains of the Western Ghats, the natural beauty of Wayanad is still in its pristine form. The place has a striking beauty that is a treat to ones eyes.

Nestled in the forests are luxury resorts offering Ayurvedic massages and relaxing spas for the tired travellers looking at rejuvenating their minds as well as their bodies. Some of the things to do in Kerala's least populous district for adventure enthusiasts are listed below.

Trek to the heart-shaped lake

At over 6,800ft, Chembra is Wayanad's highest peak. However, only those who make the effort to climb can enjoy the sight of Hridaya Saras, the heart-shaped lake. Permits are given to travellers for a five kilometre hike through a tea estate that leads to the watchtower. The three and a half kilometre trail through forests and grassland which leads to the misty summit, offers a spectacular view all around.

Stay in a tree house

Perched 60ft above a lush canopy of rainforest, the tree houses at Vythiri Resort are easily the best in the country. Built by indigenous tribals with locally sourced materials, the five luxurious cottages run on solar power and utilise natural spring water that flows down the hillside. At Tranquil Plantation Hideaway, travellers can stay in the luxurious tree houses, built on a gulmohur with a breathtaking view of the sprawling coffee estate, or the Serenetree villa perched high on stilts, overlooking the plantation.

Take a boat ride at Banasura Sagar

Banasura Sagar is India's largest earth dam and the second largest in Asia. Spread over 1700 hectares, 19 islands dot the reservoir. Tourists can indulge in pedal boats or speedboat rides while staying at the luxurious Silver Woods Resort. For a traditional Kerala experience and scenic views, try Banasura Island Retreat, an ideal base for treks to Banasura Hill and Little Meenmutty waterfalls.

Enjoy amazing waterfalls

One of the most attractive falls in the district is the Soochipara Falls located in a dense forest. Meenmutty Falls near Vaduvanchal is also must-see tourist attraction. Travellers can stay at Meenmutty Heights or Sunrise Valley to enjoy the 984ft cascade.

Cave drawings at Edakkal

Edakkal Cave is one of India's most important prehistoric rock shelters. These wall carvings is believed to belong to the Neolithic Age. The trail continues past the 4000ft-high cave to the top of Ambukuthi Mountain. Edakkal Hermitage has rooms named after Paleolithic cave sites and has a unique Cave Restaurant for candle-lit dinners.

If you are thinking of spending your weekends, Wayanad in Kerala is the ideal place to be away from the hustle bustle of urban life.
