Gorakhpur is a small hamlet in Uttar Pradesh that has seen the rise and fall of many empires like the Mauryan, Shunga, Kushana and Guptas.

Rich with the culture and heritage of these empires, it gets its name from the saint Gorakshnath who is said to have spread the teachings of the Gita here.

The beautiful town boasts of the ruins of many dynasties that ruled here but what makes it a travellers delight is the Geeta Vatika, which has many beautiful sculptures of the lord.

Tourists can relax and rejuvenate in this peaceful town and enjoy the many attractions it has to offer. Here is a look at a few of the places to visit in Gorakhpur.

Geeta Vatika

The Geeta Vatika is a famous temple known for its many amazing statues of Radha and Krishna. Devotees come here from far and wide to pray to the lord and seek his blessing here. Tourists can marvel at the many sculptures of the lord here.

Gita Press

A tourist place in Gorakhpur is a very old press, known to publish only texts and teachings from the Gita. This press was established in the 1920's and is rightfully named Gita Press.

Devotees after visiting the temple head here to purchase books and other holy texts. Tourists can also browse through the many religious books that are printed and sold here.

You can also buy a revised edition of the complete Gita here and learn more about the teachings it has to offer.

Kushmi Forest

The Kushmi Forest which is again close to the Geeta Vatika and is filled with Sal and Sequoia trees. The forest also houses a shrine dedicated to Goddess Buddhia Mai.

Devotees who come here believe that should you make a wish here, it is bound to come true. The unique feature about this forest is that it has a forest, and a zoo attached to it and you can see animals like monkeys, fox and deer.

Ramgarh Tal

The famous Ramgarh Tal is a huge lake known for its scenic beauty. Tourists coming here can go on a boat ride or have a picnic with their family and friends along its banks. You can also take a nice refreshing dip in the cool waters.

How to Reach Gorakhpur

By Air: Gorakhpur has a small airport located 6 km from the city. It is connected with Mumbai and Delhi.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Gorakhpur Junction. The town is the headquarters of North Eastern Railways and is linked to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow and Allahabad, Cochin, Kolkata, Lucknow, Agra and Jaipur among others.

By Road: A well-established network of road transport, both public and private, is available to all major cities of Uttar Pradesh.
