International travel is no longer exclusive to residents of major cities. Young travellers, especially those under 35 from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, are now leading this trend.
Visa applications from first-time travellers have surged by 32%, reflecting a shift in travel dynamics. This change is driven by increased disposable incomes and the ease of digital visa applications.
New-age travellers are seeking unique experiences like concerts, sports tourism, and chasing the northern lights. In 2025, destinations like Bali for minimoons, Phuket for bachelorette parties, Vietnam for solo trips, and Dubai for luxurious getaways are popular choices. The rise in international travel is evident with a significant increase in visa applications from smaller cities.
Changing Travel Dynamics
According to Atlys, a digital visa processing company, there's been a notable rise in international visa applications from first-time travellers over the past year. Over half of this growth comes from smaller cities, indicating a shift away from traditional metro-centric travel patterns. This trend highlights the evolving nature of travel aspirations among Indians.
"Travel is no longer seen as a luxury; it's become an essential part of life," says Mohak Nahta, founder & CEO of Atlys. "We're witnessing annual growth in first-time international travellers. This trend is propelled by cost-effective international flights, straightforward digital visa procedures, and rising income levels."
Popular Destinations
The UAE and Southeast Asia are top destinations for these new travellers. While Dubai remains a favourite, countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia are gaining popularity due to their affordability and engaging experiences. Simplified visa processes also contribute to their appeal among Indian tourists.
A more accessible passport system supports this travel boom. From 2014 to 2023, over 10.09 crore passports were issued in India. The number of Passport Seva Kendras has grown from 153 to 523 during this period, making it easier for people to obtain passports and explore international destinations.
Social Media Influence
Social media plays a crucial role in shaping travel plans for these new-age explorers. Platforms like Instagram help them discover trendy cafes and hidden gems worldwide. This online influence aids in curating itineraries that cater to their interests and preferences.
Despite the expansion of passport services, only about 8.71% of India's population currently holds an active passport. This indicates significant potential for future growth in first-time international travellers as more people gain access to global travel opportunities.
This shift signifies more than just a trend; it's a fundamental social change as residents from smaller Indian cities embrace international travel as part of their personal journeys. Cities once considered unlikely candidates for global exploration are now stepping up on their own terms.
