Yes, this is a unique fiesta. Men, mainly youngsters happily jump into a well, lake or a river in search of gifts thrown by people. The background to this story goes back to the time of Jesus's birth. Christian religious texts say that John, the Baptist is said to have rejoiced in his mother's womb after hearing about the birth of Jesus.

Later on, it was St. John,the Baptist, who baptises Jesus Christ on the banks of the river Jordan. The well or a lake symbolises the womb of John's mother, Elizabeth. The act of merry making in the water in symbolic of John the Baptist's happiness inside his mother's womb.
It is popular as Sao Joa festival in Goa. It is one of the well-known festivals in which all Christians take part with enthusiasm. Hence, it is also known 'the Feast of John, the Baptist'.

Sao Joao Festival even rejoices and invites the monsoon season. In fact, they enjoy playing in water when there are heavy rains. Hence, this is one of the unusual events that bring several people together.
Not just this, they find gifts drowned in water. However, this event is not famous in all parts of Goa. In South Goa, Sao Joao is not celebrated grandly; it has more importance in North Goa.

Men drink the local beverage Fenny before jumping into the water. After the carnival, it is the time for yummy food. They enjoy the sumptuous meal and drink to their heart's content.
During Sao Joao, there is also a custom of folk dances in Salcete Taluk. In Bardez, it is the time for the colourful boat race. Traditionally decorated boats are used in the boat races.

Ultimately, Sao Joao is a blend of merry-making and adventure. It is such carnivals that bring several people together.
