Rameswaram, The Pilgrim Town!

A pilgrim town both for the Shivites and Vaishnavities, Rameswaram is part of the legendary Pamban island. Lying at the tip of the Indian peninsula, Rameswaram is connected to India through the Pamban bridge and is the closest point to Sri Lanka.

Rameswaram is the holy abode of the Ramanathaswamy temple that is part of the famous Char Dham Yatra. According to Indian mythology, it was here that Lord Ram spent several days planning the rescue of Sita by building a bridge. Hence, Rameswaram is one of the most revered places by Hindus.

It is said that a pilgrimage to Varanasi (Kashi) would turn out to be unfruitful if one doesn't visit Rameswaram. Also, there are 64 tirthas (sacred ponds) in and around Rameswaram which adds to religious tourism in the town.

Ramanathaswamy Temple

The main religious attraction in the town is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Ramanathaswamy temple. It's a construction of the 12th century Pandya dynasty. There are 1212 pillars in one of the grand corridors here.

Adam's Bridge

A chain of limestone shoals across the Pamban island and the Mannar island is Adam's bridge, formerly known as Ram setu. This is the historic bridge that Lord Ram built with the assistance of the Vanar kingdom. The earliest mention of this bridge by a British cartographer calls it Adam's bridge.

The second longest sea bridge in India, the Pamban bridge connects mainland India with Rameswaram. The length of the bridge is 2.3 km. The railways bridge was open to public in 1914.

Uthirakosamangai

Another temple by the Pandyas, Uthirakosamangai is a Shaiva temple near Ramnathapuram. The temple houses an old Nataraja idol carved out of emerald. This is among the most visited temples in the town.

Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi

Located in the southern most tip of the island, Dhanushkodi houses the Kodandaramaswamy temple. Also, the place is one of the better known ghost towns of India.
