According to local lore, Lord Shiva was traveling to Kashi (Varanasi) with a million gods and goddesses. They stopped to rest at this place. Shiva instructed them to wake up before sunrise to continue their journey. However, none but Shiva himself woke up in time. In anger, he cursed them to become stone images. Hence, the place was named Unakoti, signifying that there were one less than a crore gods and goddesses.

From Agartala, one can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Kailashahar and then proceed to Unakoti.

The best time to visit Unakoti is during the winter months, from November to March, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing. During this time, the region experiences mild temperatures, making it comfortable for visitors to explore the site.
