The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the most important and grand Hindu festivals in India. In 2025, the Rath Yatra will begin on June 27, and it promises to be a special celebration filled with faith, joy, and devotion.

Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025

The Divine Journey Begins

The festival marks the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, from the Jagannath Temple in Puri to the Gundicha Temple. This 3-kilometer journey is unique because it is the only time in the year when the deities leave the temple and come out among the people.

Huge wooden chariots are built for each deity, and they are beautifully decorated for the occasion. Devotees believe that pulling these chariots with ropes brings blessings and removes sins. This event is not just a religious tradition-it's a moment when everyone joins together in devotion and celebration.

Special Stop at Mausi Maa Temple

On the way to the Gundicha Temple, Lord Jagannath's chariot stops at the Mausi Maa Temple. "Mausi Maa" means "maternal aunt" in Odia and Hindi. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Ardhasini, who is believed to protect Puri from natural disasters, especially floods. She is also considered the guardian of the town along with Lord Kapalamochana Shiva.

The Mausi Maa Temple was built during the time of the Keshari dynasty and is located near Balagandi in Daitapati Sahi. Devotees perform special pujas and offer prayers at this temple, adding more meaning to the Yatra.

Rituals and Timings

The Rath Yatra begins on the Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha according to the Vedic calendar. In 2025, the spiritual time starts on June 26 at 01:25 PM and ends on June 27 at 11:19 AM. The return journey, called Bahuda Yatra, happens on the ninth day after the main event.

A Celebration of Equality and Tradition

This festival is a testament to India's profound spiritual heritage. It celebrates unity, where people of all backgrounds come together. Lord Jagannath's journey is regarded as a symbol of equal love and care for all, transcending caste, religion, and social status.

If you are a spiritual seeker or someone interested in Indian culture, the Rath Yatra in Puri is a perfect event to witness. Mark your calendar for June 27, 2025, and be a part of this timeless tradition.
