Murudeshwar temple in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka is a home to the second tallest Shiva statue in the world! Surrounded by the waters of the Arabian sea on three sides, the magnificent view of Lord Shiva overlooking the serene Murudeshwara beach is a sight to behold!

The spectacles of Murudeshwar temple in Uttara Kannada is not just confined to the mighty statue of Lord Shiva! The temple is a home to a 20 storied 'Gopura' which is an illustration of the brilliant architecture employed in the temple. The 237.5 feet high 'Raja Gopura' is one of the tallest of its kind in the world!

The temple is entirely modernized with an exception to of the sanctum sanctorum which is still dark and retains its composure. Two life-size elephants in concrete stand guard at the steps leading to the Lord Shiva statue. The breath-taking view of the 123-feet Shiva idol from the top of the Raja gopura is simply unparalleled! The temple authorities have installed a lift for the same.

The main deity is Sri Mridesa Linga, also called Murudeshwara. The Llinga is believed to be a piece of the original Atma Linga (the soul of Shiva), which Ravana got as a boon from Lord Shiva himself, and is about two feet below the ground level!

Murudeshwara beach is another attraction here. The serene beach, flanked by the majestic Arabian sea on one side and the mighty Shiva on the other, is a perfect spot for taking a long stroll!
