During the celebration of World Tourism Day 2024, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, announced the winners of the prestigious Best Tourism Villages Competition. This annual event, now in its second year, aims to highlight rural villages across India that preserve and promote their cultural and natural heritage. The competition, first introduced in 2023, received a remarkable 795 entries from all over the country. This year, the enthusiasm grew even stronger, with 991 applications from 30 States and Union Territories. After careful evaluation, 36 villages were declared winners across eight categories. Among these winners were two standout villages from Meghalaya: Umden and Mawphlang, both recognized for their unique contributions to rural tourism.
