Komodo National Park is situated between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores, in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago which is made up of the three major islands of Rinca, Komodo, and Padar as well as countless smaller ones that are all volcanic in origin. This national park is situated at the meeting point of two continental plates, where the Australian and Sunda ecosystems meet. It is part of the Wallacea Biogeographical Region and is known as the "shatter belt." The 219,322-ha site has been designated as a global conservation priority area because it contains unique land and marine ecosystems.
The Komodo Lizard is the park's most distinctive native. These enormous lizards, which are unique in the world and have important evolutionary ramifications, are of tremendous scientific interest. The Komodo lizard, which can reach typical lengths of 2 to 3 meters, is the biggest extant species of lizard. It is most well known as "Komodo Dragons" due to its looks and violent nature. The species is the last survivor of a remnant population of giant lizards that formerly roamed Australia and Indonesia. In addition to serving as a home for the Komodo dragon, the Park is also home to numerous other wildlife including, Timor deer, orange-footed scrub owl, long-tailed macaques, sea turtles, dugongs, water buffalo, wild boar, Russell's pit viper, the endemic Rinca rat, cobra, dolphins, palm civets, whales, and fruit bats.
History of Komodo National Park:
In March 1980, the Indonesian government created Komodo National Park, which now protects the islands of Komodo, Padar, Rinca, and Gili Motong. In 1991, UNESCO designated Komodo National Park as World Heritage Site. When Lieutenant, J. K. H. van Steyn van Henbroek first revealed the rare Komodo dragon to the scientific community in 1912, the park was first created to protect it. Since then, the protection of the entire region's biodiversity, both marine and terrestrial, has been an aim of conservation efforts.
Fishermen from South Flores, South Sulawesi, Manggarai, and Bima (Sumbawa) make up the majority of the population in and surrounding the park. Although there are still Ata Modo descendants living in Komodo, there is no longer any pure-blood Ata Modo, and their culture and language are gradually blending with those of the more recent settlers.
