Ghost Towns of India

India is a land touched by time but there are still some places scattered across the land which although given up by both man and time have stood their ground. Forsaken and abandoned and better known as ghost towns these places cling on to their past and draw in newcomers to lose themselves in their beauty, mystery and charm. Here is a list of places in India where life once thrived.

Hampi

Hampi

Probably the most heart-wrenching story of the forsaken lands is that of Hampi! Hampi was a part of the thriving capital city of the Vijaynagara Empire from 1336 to 1565 after which it was laid to dust by the Deccan Muslim confederacy and it was forever abandoned.

Kalvantin Durg

Kalvantin Durg

Known as one of the most dangerous areas in India, Kalvantin Durg is supposed to be the abode of spirits and ghouls. Located on the Sahyadri mountains, it is in close proximity to the famous hill station of Matheran. Trek but don't stay is the advice that goes around here.

The deserted town of Bhangarh in the Alwar district of Rajasthan has a haunted fort. People who venture inside the fort before sunrise and after sunset have never been found. Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri

Emperor Akbar built this town and proclaimed it to be the most beautiful town in the world. However soon the realisation dawned that there was no water for the township. Hence, the town shifted elsewhere and was forsaken for a good ten years. Now, it is a famous tourist spot.

Ross Island

Ross Island

2 km to the East of Port Blair in Andaman stands a beautiful island with a church called the Ross Island. This island faced a terrible earthquake in 1941 and has seen no residents after that. The ruins of the church, gardens, and ballrooms can still be seen.

Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi

Located in the Southern tip of Rameshwaram, Dhanushkodi was abandoned following a cyclonic storm in 1964. Along with destroying the entire town, a passenger train carrying 100 locals drowned in the sea which forced the Government to give up rebuilding the port city. Since then, there's not much life around other than a few fishing hamlets here and there.

Mandav

Mandav

Mandav or what was previously called Mandu/Mandavgad is a ruined city of Madhya Pradesh. Located in the Dhar district of Malwa region, Mandav is a fortress town known for its architectural finesse.
This city saw continuous battles and changed hands through the course of history. The Jahaz Mehal is placed between two lakes to give its viewers a feeling of the palace set afloat.

Lakhpat

Lakhpat

Literally translated as the city of millionaire, Lakhpat is a fortified town that saw its decline through several stages in history. At first a slight earthquake diverted the flow of river Sindhu. The residents followed the river. The deathblow came during the division of India and Pakistan when the residents left unable to bear the increasing violence. Now, it is a popular ghost city with ruins of a memorable past.
