Why the name, Bangladesh?

After the country of Bangladesh was founded in 1971, this area in Kashmir was also given the name Bangladesh by the inhabitants. The village, then known as Jurimon, was set on fire in 1971, leaving its residents without a place to live. They eventually moved there, some distance from the burned-out area, and hence, gave it the name Bangladesh.

Previously, there were just 5 to 6 houses; today, there are 50 to 60, and the locals depend on agriculture for a living. The village was long absent from government records; nevertheless, in 2010, the DC office in Bandipora recognized Bangladesh by name and recognized it as a separate village located in Kashmir, India.

Shikaras have been made available as a way to promote sustainable tourism and increase public understanding of the value of protecting the lake's ecosystem. The people now have hope and optimism thanks to the government's support of the inhabitants and dedication to increasing tourism in the area.
